Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, who has been representing Pennsylvania’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress since 2018, recently shared her thoughts on a range of issues through social media posts. Born in Watertown, New York in 1959 and currently residing in Swarthmore, Scanlon is an alumna of Colgate University and the University of Pennsylvania.
On July 3, 2025, Congresswoman Scanlon expressed her dissatisfaction with the outcome of a vote concerning the OBBB (Outlining Better Budgeting Bill). She stated “The result of today’s vote on the OBBB is disappointing, to say the least. But the fight isn’t over. I’ll press on for a better future for all Americans.”
The following day, July 4, she commemorated Independence Day by emphasizing America’s historical struggle for freedom and equality. She posted “Happy Independence Day For 249 years, Americans have fought to advance freedom, opportunity, and equality for all – to form a more perfect union. Attempts to sell out our hard-won freedoms will always fail. We will never stop fighting to make the American Dream a reality.”
On July 5, Scanlon criticized an action by the White House regarding funding cuts for educational programs. She remarked “White House blocked funding for after-school and summer programs, the day before funds were to be sent – this hurts poor kids the most.”
Mary Gay Scanlon continues her legislative work focusing on promoting equitable opportunities and resources for her constituents.
