Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, who represents Pennsylvania’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of statements on her social media account on March 9, 2026, addressing issues ranging from honoring Capitol defenders to condemning bigoted remarks by a fellow representative.

In one post, Scanlon reflected on recent actions to recognize those involved in defending the Capitol during the January 6, 2021 attack: “It’s a start, but far from the honor that is due to the brave men and women who defended our Constitution, our Capitol, and all those who worked there on January 6, 2021.” (March 9, 2026)

Later that day, she addressed the death of Corporal Timothy O’Connor in Chester County: “Corporal Timothy O’Connor was senselessly killed in the line of duty in Chester County last night. This is a tragedy for our state, for our law enforcement community. My heart goes out to his loved ones grieving this unthinkable tragedy.” (March 9, 2026)

Scanlon also responded to remarks made by Representative Andy Ogles: “America is a place for people of all faiths and from all walks of life. These bigoted comments are beneath anyone representing Americans in the People’s House, and @RepOgles should apologize. @HouseGOP needs to condemn these reprehensible words.” (March 9, 2026)

Mary Gay Scanlon has served as a member of Congress since 2018 after succeeding Pat Meehan. She was born in Watertown, New York in 1959 and currently resides in Swarthmore. Scanlon holds degrees from Colgate University and the University of Pennsylvania.
