Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, representing Pennsylvania’s 5th district since 2018, has been actively engaging with her community and addressing significant issues through her recent activities and statements. On June 2, 2025, she shared her participation in local events and expressed concerns about legislative matters via social media.
On the morning of June 2, Congresswoman Scanlon attended an event at Navy Yard where she joined approximately 2,000 participants for a race organized by Girls on the Run. She remarked on the event stating “Lovely day to join 2,000 Girls on the Run for a race in Navy Yard this morning! #GOTRPhilly”.
Later that day, Scanlon visited the Veterans Affairs facilities in Philadelphia. During this visit, she met with leaders at @VAPhiladelphia and toured both the CReATE Motion Center and Women’s Health Center. She highlighted their ongoing research aimed at improving treatments for osteoarthritis—a condition affecting many veterans—and noted “We discussed their important research to develop better treatments for osteoarthritis, which disproportionately affects all veterans”.
In another post made later that evening on June 2, Congresswoman Scanlon criticized legislative decisions impacting healthcare and nutrition assistance programs. Her tweet pointedly addressed what she described as a financial benefit to billionaires at the expense of essential services: “Anyone who voted for the BIG BS Bill voted to finance the biggest BILLIONAIRE TAX CUT by GUTTING health care and SNAP for millions.”
Mary Gay Scanlon was born in Watertown, New York in 1959 and resides in Swarthmore. She is an alumna of Colgate University with a BA obtained in 1980 and holds a JD from the University of Pennsylvania awarded in 1984.
