Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, a representative of Pennsylvania’s 5th district since 2018, shared her insights and observations through a series of tweets recently. The tweets encompass discussions on financial accountability, local educational initiatives, and national political issues.
On April 28, Scanlon referenced a statement from Max Stier, the chief executive of the Partnership for Public Service. Stier criticized certain financial claims made by Elon Musk, stating that “Not only is Musk vastly overinflating the money he has saved, he is not accounting for the exponentially larger waste that he is creating,” He indicated that the resultant costs are being passed onto the American populace.
Scanlon remarked on her visit to the Philadelphia Job Corps on April 29. She expressed her appreciation for the program, which provides career training and education for low-income individuals aged 16-24. According to Scanlon, “I enjoyed meeting participants of Philadelphia Job Corps, a free career training and education program for low-income individuals aged 16-24. Job Corps helps these impressive young people receive vocational training, hands-on training programs in culinary arts and healthcare.”
Addressing the state of the national political landscape on April 30, Scanlon critiqued the current administration she refers to as “Trump 2.0.” She described its first 100 days as marked by significant economic and political challenges, stating, “Trump 2.0’s first 100 days brought a trade war, increased chance of recession, attacks on our courts and freedoms, and a raft of illegal ‘orders.'” In her critique, she questioned the lack of action from the DC GOP despite calls from both the courts and the public.
Mary Gay Scanlon, at the age of 63, continues to represent Pennsylvania’s 5th district. Having grown up in Watertown, New York, and later relocating to Swarthmore, she has been an active political figure since succeeding former U.S. Congress member Pat Meehan. Scanlon’s educational background includes a BA from Colgate University and a JD from the University of Pennsylvania.
