Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, who has represented Pennsylvania’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress since 2018, posted several statements on her official X account on October 13, 2025, addressing both international and domestic issues.
In a post published at 16:15 UTC, Scanlon commented on the release of Israeli hostages by Hamas after more than two years of captivity. She wrote: “After 738 days, the surviving Israeli hostages have been released by Hamas and are reuniting with their families. As we celebrate their release, we mourn those who will not be able to return to their loved ones.”
Later that day, at 17:05 UTC, Scanlon criticized House Republicans for not convening during October. She stated: “.@HouseGOP hasn’t come in to work all of October. @SpeakerJohnson needs to call the House back and work with @HouseDemocrats to save healthcare for millions of Americans.”
At 19:12 UTC, she further addressed what she described as Republican inaction regarding healthcare legislation. In her words: “Republicans’ refusal to come to work and solve the healthcare crisis they caused is going to affect all of us. Americans will face higher health costs, hospital closures, and longer wait times, if Congressional Republicans don’t get back to work.”
Scanlon’s remarks come amid ongoing debates over healthcare access and costs in the United States. Her comments reflect concerns about legislative gridlock and its impact on essential services.
Mary Gay Scanlon was born in Watertown, New York in 1959 and currently resides in Swarthmore. She graduated from Colgate University with a BA in 1980 and earned a JD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1984. She succeeded Pat Meehan as representative of Pennsylvania’s 5th district.
