Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, who represents Pennsylvania’s 5th district and has been serving in the U.S. Congress since 2018, has recently made several announcements on social media. Scanlon was born in Watertown, New York in 1959 and currently resides in Swarthmore. She graduated from Colgate University with a BA and later obtained a JD from the University of Pennsylvania.
On May 15, 2025, Scanlon announced via Twitter that she, along with fellow representatives Jamie Raskin and Pramila Jayapal, initiated an investigation into former President Donald Trump’s plan to accept a $400 million “flying palace” from Qatar. “The U.S. Government is not for sale.”
Later on the same day, Scanlon shared additional resources for further information about the investigation through another tweet: “Read more here: https://t.co/M4ABpSsQvf”
On May 16, 2025, Scanlon addressed rising pedestrian fatalities due to larger vehicles’ increasing popularity. She stated her leadership role in advocating for new safety standards aimed at reducing the lethality of cars during crashes involving pedestrians through legislation known as the Pedestrian Protection Act. She also referenced coverage by Heather Graf on this issue: “With the rise in popularity of larger, heavier vehicles, we’re seeing pedestrian fatalities reach historic highs.”
