Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, representing Pennsylvania’s 5th district since 2018, recently shared her views on social media regarding significant political issues. The Congresswoman, who succeeded Pat Meehan and has a legal background with degrees from Colgate University and the University of Pennsylvania, voiced her support for law enforcement and criticized certain legislative actions by House Republicans.
On May 19, 2025, Congresswoman Scanlon expressed her support for law enforcement during Police Week in Washington D.C., highlighting the efforts of officers who defended the Capitol on January 6. She stated, “I was proud to mark Police Week in D.C. by standing in support of the heroic officers who defended our democracy on January 6. It’s time for @HouseGOP to pay more than lip service to the brave officers who protect our Capitol and communities and actually honor them with action.”
Later that day, Scanlon addressed House Republicans’ anticipated unveiling of what she termed their “One Big BS Bill.” She criticized the proposed legislation for allegedly funding tax cuts for billionaires at the expense of Medicaid and SNAP programs. She remarked, “If House Republicans want to wait until 1 a.m. Wednesday to reveal their ‘One Big BS Bill,’ we’ll be there to expose that they are paying for billionaire tax cuts by gutting Medicaid and SNAP.”
On May 20, 2025, Scanlon succinctly critiqued the notion of fiscal responsibility through a brief tweet that simply read “fiscal responsibility”.
Mary Gay Scanlon continues to serve as an influential voice in Congress from Swarthmore, where she resides.
