Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, representing Pennsylvania’s 5th district since 2018, has been vocal on several issues through her social media platform. Her recent posts address a range of topics from budgetary concerns to campaign finance reform.
On May 4, 2025, Scanlon criticized former President Trump’s attempt to cut funding for public television and radio. She stated that this move would negatively impact local stations such as WHYY, WXPN, and WITF. “Trump’s illegal attempt to defund public television and radio would hurt local stations: WHYY, WXPN, and WITF. The following day, May 5, she shared her experience meeting with Delaware County’s League of Women Voters. During the meeting, they discussed the first 100 days of the Trump administration and its implications on Medicaid and Social Security. Later that day, Scanlon expressed concern over financial influences in politics. She emphasized the need for significant reforms in campaign finance laws due to what she described as “the corrosive impact” of substantial undisclosed contributions in political campaigns. “The corrosive impact of big, dark money in politics has never been clearer. We need substantial campaign finance reform and enforcement.”
Mary Gay Scanlon was born in Watertown, New York in 1959 and currently resides in Swarthmore. She graduated from Colgate University with a BA in 1980 and earned a JD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1984.
