Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, who represents Pennsylvania’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of statements on October 1, 2025, addressing both religious observance and ongoing political disputes over healthcare and government funding.
In her first post of the day, Scanlon marked Yom Kippur with a message to her constituents: “Yom Kippur is a time for meaningful reflection. G’mar Chatima Tova to everyone observing the holiday in PA-05.” (October 1, 2025)
Later that evening, she criticized Congressional Republicans and the White House regarding recent developments in healthcare policy and government operations. In one tweet, she stated: “Instead of working with Democrats to solve the healthcare crisis created by Congressional Republicans, they joined the White House to shut down the government. Unless you’re a Mar-a-Lago Millionaire, Americans can’t afford health insurance increases of up to 80% more.” (October 1, 2025)
Scanlon continued her criticism in another post later that night: “Same story, Different day. Congressional Republicans and this White House never get tired of trying to rip away healthcare for Millions of Americans.” (October 1, 2025)
Mary Gay Scanlon has served as the representative for Pennsylvania’s 5th District since replacing Pat Meehan in 2018. She was born in Watertown, New York in 1959 and currently resides in Swarthmore at age 63. Scanlon holds degrees from Colgate University (BA) and the University of Pennsylvania (JD).
