Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, who represents Pennsylvania’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, has recently criticized Republican policies regarding food aid, healthcare, and support for low-income seniors through a series of posts on her official social media account.
On July 18, 2025, Scanlon posted: “American taxpayers are going to pay for the purchase and destruction of 1 million pounds of food that was supposed to feed 1.5 million malnourished children. That isn’t just un-American, its immoral.”
Later that day, she continued her criticism by stating: “Trump’s Republican Party wants Millions to go without: – Healthcare – Food – Life-saving Aid – NPR and PBS” (posted at 02:37 UTC).
In another post on July 18, Scanlon addressed claims about Medicaid policy changes: “When Republicans tell you OBBB ‘strengthens Medicaid,’ they’re lying. @USDOL cut job training for low-income seniors after the President signed a law expanding work requirements to receive healthcare and SNAP Benefits. Thousands of seniors could see their benefits in limbo.”
Mary Gay Scanlon has represented Pennsylvania’s 5th District since replacing Pat Meehan in 2018. She was born in Watertown, New York in 1959 and currently resides in Swarthmore. Scanlon holds a BA from Colgate University (1980) and a JD from the University of Pennsylvania (1984).
