Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, who represents Pennsylvania’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of statements on October 1, 2025, addressing the recent government shutdown and criticizing Republican actions regarding healthcare and federal oversight.
In a post at midnight on October 1, Scanlon stated: “It’s midnight: the U.S. Government has shut down because Republicans left DC instead of saving healthcare coverage for millions of Americans. But I’ll keep fighting for PA-05 Families.”
Later that day, she commented on actions related to federal oversight during former President Donald Trump’s administration. On October 1 at 13:45 UTC, she wrote: “It’s open season for CORRUPTION in Trump’s DC: First, he fired Inspectors General who uncover FRAUD, WASTE, and ABUSE in the federal government, including in the Trump administration, and last night, he cut funding for investigators and researchers who support those efforts.”
Scanlon continued her criticism with another post at 15:57 UTC on October 1. She stated: “Same Story, Different Day. 12 years ago, Republicans SHUT DOWN the government to try to GUT the Affordable Care Act. 12 years later, Republicans SHUT DOWN the government AGAIN to try to GUT Healthcare Coverage and Essential Benefits for Millions of AMERICANS.”
Mary Gay Scanlon has served as a member of Congress since replacing Pat Meehan in 2018. She was born in Watertown, New York in 1959 and currently resides in Swarthmore. Scanlon holds a BA from Colgate University (1980) and a JD from the University of Pennsylvania (1984).
