Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, who represents Pennsylvania’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, has posted a series of statements on social media addressing current legislative and judicial developments.
On July 17, 2025, Scanlon commented on recent events in the House of Representatives, stating, “Despite having the majority, House Republicans are still losing the vote.”
Later that day, she addressed concerns regarding a judicial nomination: “Over 75 former judges have advised the Senate to reject Emil Bove’s judicial nomination. Anyone who has advised the @TheJusticeDept to put the Administration’s agenda over court orders, is unfit to serve on Pennsylvania’s Third Circuit Appellate Court.” This statement was made amid ongoing debates about federal judicial appointments.
Scanlon also raised concerns about proposed reductions in funding for public broadcasting services. In her post from July 17, she stated: “The majority of Americans rely on Public Radio for emergency alerts. Cuts to PBS and NPR are just the beginning of the Trump administration’s assault on essential services used by our most vulnerable communities.”
Mary Gay Scanlon has represented Pennsylvania’s 5th District since 2018 after succeeding Pat Meehan. She was born in Watertown, New York in 1959 and currently resides in Swarthmore. Scanlon holds a BA from Colgate University and a JD from the University of Pennsylvania.
