Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, who represents Pennsylvania’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, recently posted a series of tweets highlighting both local events and her criticism of House Republicans’ recent actions.
On October 4, 2025, Scanlon shared her attendance at a community event, writing: “I was excited to attend the opening of Celia Bookshop in Swarthmore!”
Later that same day, she addressed congressional activity, stating: “It IS Crazy that @HouseGOP will stay on VACATION for a third week in a row to:
BLOCK bipartisan negotiations to end the GOP shutdown.
BLOCK work to pass appropriations bills that will PREVENT the next shutdown.
BLOCK a vote to RELEASE THE EPSTEIN FILES.” The tweet criticized House Republicans for not returning to Washington amid ongoing legislative disputes.
On October 6, 2025, Scanlon reiterated her concerns about congressional inactivity by posting: “.@HouseGOP is on week three of Vacation, while Millions of Americans are going to lose healthcare in a few weeks.
Congress needs to come back and work for the American people!”
Scanlon has represented Pennsylvania’s 5th District since replacing Pat Meehan in 2018. She was born in Watertown, New York in 1959 and currently resides in Swarthmore. Her educational background includes a BA from Colgate University and a JD from the University of Pennsylvania.
