Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, who has represented Pennsylvania’s 5th District in the U.S. Congress since 2018, recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing key issues related to Social Security, healthcare policy, and government spending under recent administrations.
On July 10, 2025, Scanlon criticized recent changes to Social Security management, stating that “DOGE gutting @SocialSecurity has caused overwhelmed phone lines, website crashes, and reduced customer service. While billionaires like Musk won’t be affected, the lives of Americans who depend on social security are now in limbo.”
In a post dated July 11, 2025, she commented on the Trump administration’s budgetary decisions regarding healthcare and federal expenditures: “Trump White House has clear priorities: Healthcare for 17 Million = ‘waste, fraud, and abuse.’ Billions of taxpayer dollars for POTUS’ renovations to the White House and hand-me-down plane = necessities.”
Scanlon further addressed immigration policy and private sector involvement on July 12, 2025. She wrote: “The biggest winners under the OBBB? Private prison contractors who will be paid billions by ICE and also happen to be big Trump donors.”
Mary Gay Scanlon was born in Watertown, New York in 1959 and currently resides in Swarthmore. She graduated from Colgate University with a BA in 1980 and earned her JD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1984.
