Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, who has represented Pennsylvania’s 5th District in the U.S. Congress since 2018, recently commented on several legislative actions and political developments through a series of posts on social media. Scanlon, a graduate of Colgate University and the University of Pennsylvania Law School, addressed issues related to federal spending, healthcare access, and food assistance programs.
On July 13, 2025, Scanlon criticized recent legislative action by House Republicans: “House Republicans just passed OBBBA that adds Trillions to the deficit while cutting healthcare and SNAP benefits for Americans. They’re not looking for ways to reduce spending – they’re looking for ways to help their Billionaire Buddies.”
The following day, July 14, 2025, she addressed another vote concerning healthcare: “House Republicans voted to defund access to reproductive healthcare, including preventative and primary care. Politicians shouldn’t decide who your healthcare providers are; you should.”
Later on July 14, 2025, Scanlon commented on food insecurity and recent administrative decisions: “First crudités, now carrot cake. Dr. Oz fails to meet the moment as Americans go hungry because @USDA canceled millions of pounds of shipments to food banks, and SNAP cuts are looming. The Trump Admin is cutting off lifelines for Americans and telling them it’s their fault.”
Mary Gay Scanlon was born in Watertown, New York in 1959 and currently resides in Swarthmore.
