Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, representing Pennsylvania’s 5th district since 2018, has been vocal on social media regarding recent decisions by the Trump administration and their impacts. Born in Watertown, New York in 1959, Scanlon currently resides in Swarthmore. She holds a BA from Colgate University and a JD from the University of Pennsylvania.

On July 8, 2025, Scanlon criticized the Trump White House for blocking funds intended for Pennsylvania schools. She described it as “another arbitrary and capricious decision by the Trump White House [that] has abruptly blocked millions of dollars promised to PA schools.”

The following day, July 9, she announced her participation in a discussion about the impacts of OBBBA with Solomon Jones on @onwurd. She invited followers to “tune in @onwurd to hear me discuss the impacts of OBBBA with @solomonjones1!”

Later that day, Scanlon addressed potential layoffs within federal agencies. She warned that “laying off tens of thousands of federal workers without the oversight or approval of Congress will result in essential services being depleted for Americans.” She emphasized that such actions are not efficient but chaotic.

Mary Gay Scanlon replaced Pat Meehan in Congress and has served since 2018.
