Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, representing Pennsylvania’s 5th district since 2018, has recently shared her views on several issues via social media. Her comments focused on the implications of recent policies and their impact on various segments of the American population.
On July 8, 2025, Scanlon expressed concern over a policy she referred to as OBBBA. She stated that it would make “Jet Fuel more affordable for Billionaires with Private Jets by having Americans pay for it with their Healthcare and SNAP.” “OBBBA will make Jet Fuel more affordable for Billionaires with Private Jets by having Americans pay for it with their Healthcare and SNAP.”
Later that day, she criticized actions taken by the Trump Administration regarding Medicaid and SNAP benefits. She noted that these actions had stripped “Medicaid and SNAP away from millions of Americans” and highlighted further concerns about reductions in VA staff. According to her, these reductions would make it “harder for Veterans to receive the benefits they need.” “Trump Administration last week: Tore Medicaid and SNAP away from millions of Americans. Trump Administration this week: Gutting 30,000 VA staff making it harder for Veterans to receive the benefits they need.”
Additionally, Scanlon appeared on WHYY’s Studio 2 where she was asked by Cherri Gregg about which parts of OBBBA would most negatively affect Pennsylvanians. In response, she indicated multiple areas of concern without specifying them in detail at that moment. “Today on @WHYY’s Studio 2, @cherrigregg asked me what parts of OBBBA will hurt Pennsylvanians the most. Let me count the ways:”
Mary Gay Scanlon was born in Watertown, New York in 1959 and currently resides in Swarthmore. She graduated from Colgate University in 1980 with a BA and earned a JD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1984.
