Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, who has represented Pennsylvania’s 5th district since 2018, recently shared her views on several pressing issues through a series of tweets. Born in Watertown, New York in 1959, Scanlon is a graduate of Colgate University and the University of Pennsylvania. She currently resides in Swarthmore.
On June 6, 2025, Scanlon addressed religious tolerance in Congress. “I have been honored to welcome constituents of all faiths to Congress. Such bigotry is an insult to the People’s House,” she stated, emphasizing that “America isn’t a theocracy – it’s a democracy.”
The following day, June 7, 2025, Scanlon participated in the Chester Peace Walk as part of the #WearOrange campaign. She expressed her commitment to addressing gun violence by saying, “I was proud to join friends and neighbors at the #WearOrange Chester Peace Walk to raise awareness of the gun violence epidemic plaguing our nation.” She noted progress made locally but stressed the importance of honoring victims and survivors.
On June 9, 2025, Scanlon celebrated Delco Pride in Media with community members. She highlighted the event’s significance by stating, “We celebrated Delco Pride in Media with a flag raising, music, and joy.” While acknowledging solidarity and progress within the LGBTQI+ community, she reminded followers of the ongoing fight for equality.
Mary Gay Scanlon has served in Congress since replacing Pat Meehan in 2018. Her academic background includes a BA from Colgate University and a JD from the University of Pennsylvania.
