Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, representing Pennsylvania’s 5th district since 2018, has shared her views on pressing national issues through a series of tweets. Born in Watertown, New York, and currently residing in Swarthmore, Scanlon holds a BA from Colgate University and a JD from the University of Pennsylvania.
On July 9, 2025, Congresswoman Scanlon addressed economic concerns by stating that “Adding more than $3 trillion to the deficit will increase interest rates and inflation which will have devastating impacts to small businesses across America.”
Later that day, she reflected on historical constitutional rights with reference to current political actions. She tweeted about the significance of the 14th Amendment’s ratification anniversary: “The 14th Amendment was ratified 157 years ago, enshrining the rights to Equal Protection for citizens born or naturalized in the U.S. and Due Process for all in law.” She further criticized actions by the Trump Administration by asserting her commitment to defending these rights: “Today, the Trump Administration is attacking these rights. I will continue to stand up for the rule of law.”
In another post made on July 9, Scanlon highlighted a statement from fellow representative Pramila Jayapal regarding tax policy implications under Republican legislation. Quoting Jayapal’s remarks on former President Trump’s tax promises affecting tipped workers, she tweeted: “.@RepJayapal: ‘Trump’s promise to exempt taxes that tipped workers pay may sound good, but a look under the hood of the Republican tax law reveals a big betrayal and little benefit to the millions of Americans working for tips.’
