Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, representing Pennsylvania’s 5th district since 2018, recently shared her thoughts on various issues via social media. Scanlon, who succeeded Pat Meehan and resides in Swarthmore, has been vocal about her legislative efforts and advocacy for public servants.
On May 9, 2025, Scanlon expressed support for the Truth in Tariffs Act by stating “I’m proud to cosponsor the Truth in Tariffs Act so that Americans can get real-time info about the impact of the Trump Tariffs on their family budgets.” This act aims to provide transparency regarding the economic effects of tariffs imposed during Donald Trump’s presidency.
Later that day, she addressed a personnel change at the Library of Congress with a critical tone. In response to Dr. Hayden’s dismissal as Librarian of Congress, Scanlon tweeted “Another disgraceful attack on a patriotic public servant. Dr. Hayden is brilliant and forward-thinking. She made history as the first woman and first African American Librarian of Congress. Her baseless firing is a loss for every American who values facts, history, and truth.”
On May 12, 2025, Scanlon highlighted her participation in an event focused on cancer prevention. She wrote “The #CongressionalFamilies Program is a bipartisan effort to increase understanding of cancer prevention and early detection. I was honored to join @preventcancer for their spring reception to honor the memories of those we’ve lost and recommit ourselves to prevention.” The program emphasizes bipartisan cooperation in health awareness initiatives.
Mary Gay Scanlon was born in Watertown, New York in 1959 and graduated from Colgate University with a BA before earning a JD from the University of Pennsylvania.
