Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, who represents Pennsylvania’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, used her social media platform to highlight concerns about potential increases in healthcare costs for Southeastern Pennsylvanians if a government shutdown occurs without reversing Medicaid cuts or extending Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits.
On September 30, 2025, Scanlon posted: “I did the math to see how much more Southeastern Pennsylvanians will pay in healthcare costs, if Republicans choose to shutdown the government without reversing Medicaid Cuts or extending ACA tax credits.” In a follow-up tweet on the same day, she provided a resource for constituents: “You can calculate how much more your family will be paying here:

As the deadline approached, Scanlon warned of imminent consequences and criticized Republican leadership: “The government will shut down in a few hours.
Republicans in Congress and the White House put the interests of Billionaires over the Healthcare of millions of Americans and refused to negotiate with Democrats.
I’ll keep fighting for all Americans.” This statement was posted on October 1, 2025.
Scanlon has represented Pennsylvania’s 5th District since 2018 after succeeding Pat Meehan. She was born in Watertown, New York in 1959 and currently resides in Swarthmore. Her educational background includes a BA from Colgate University and a JD from the University of Pennsylvania.
