Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, who represents Pennsylvania’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of messages on her social media account addressing national disaster preparedness, economic policy decisions, and a local community event.

On August 29, 2025, Scanlon referenced the twentieth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and raised concerns about current federal emergency management policies. She wrote, “20 years ago, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, and a lack of preparation caused historic devastation and the loss of life. By gutting @fema and targeting those voicing concerns about our readiness during Hurricane Season, this administration is putting the American people at” (August 29, 2025).

Later that evening, she commented on recent economic policy changes affecting Americans’ cost of living. In her post, Scanlon stated: “A DISASTER for the country would be making life more expensive for Americans by cutting their SNAP Benefits and Healthcare, then imposing TARIFFS that make the Cost of GROCERIES SKYROCKET. Oh wait… you did that.” (August 29, 2025).

The following day, Scanlon shared an update from her local community: “A birthday party broke out at the farmers market this morning!” (August 30, 2025).

Scanlon has represented Pennsylvania’s 5th District since replacing Pat Meehan in 2018. Born in Watertown, New York in 1959 and currently residing in Swarthmore at age 63, she holds degrees from Colgate University (BA) and the University of Pennsylvania (JD). Her public statements often reflect both national issues—such as disaster response and economic policy—and engagement with her local constituency.
