Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, who represents Pennsylvania’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, expressed concerns on July 21, 2025, regarding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations and their impact on American communities.
In a post made at 21:27 UTC, Scanlon stated, “American communities are being terrorized by ICE agents who aren’t even targeting criminals:
– >70% of the people ICE has detained have zero criminal records
– 93% have no violent convictions https://t.co/XZGWZyHmNo“
Later that evening at 21:53 UTC, she reiterated her position with another statement: “American communities are terrified and intimidated because ICE is targeting immigrants who are lawfully present, and undocumented immigrants with no criminal record.
NOT the worst of the worst. https://t.co/kPOqoKFak9“
At 22:16 UTC on the same day, Scanlon addressed concerns about enforcement tactics: “Americans feel unsafe when unmarked, masked ICE agents patrol their streets.
Nobody feels safer when the might of the US military is being deployed against them. https://t.co/fjkq0qpG3F“
Mary Gay Scanlon has represented Pennsylvania’s 5th District since replacing Pat Meehan in 2018. She was born in Watertown, New York in 1959 and currently resides in Swarthmore. Scanlon holds a BA from Colgate University (1980) and a JD from the University of Pennsylvania (1984).
