A group of Republican lawmakers in Pennsylvania is set to introduce a series of bills aimed at combating the act of “swatting.” Swatting involves making false emergency calls that prompt significant law enforcement responses, often involving SWAT teams. This initiative comes in response to an increase in swatting incidents, including a recent case at a York County Walmart.
The proposed legislation seeks to hold individuals accountable for these dangerous hoaxes. Representative Ryan Mackenzie plans to introduce a bill that would classify swatting as a felony if it results in bodily harm during the response. “The very nature of these swatting incidents creates the high risk that violence will occur and someone answering the emergency call may get hurt,” Mackenzie stated. “My bill would ensure significant criminal penalties are in place to serve as a deterrent.”
Representative Craig Williams aims to provide victims with legal recourse against those responsible for swatting. “Swatting inflicts serious damage on individuals and property,” Williams said. “My legislation grants victims the right to sue individuals making false reports.”
Another aspect of the legislative package, proposed by Representative Dawn Keefer, focuses on financial accountability. Her bill would allow courts to order perpetrators to cover costs incurred by state or municipal responders due to swatting calls. “The blue line is already stretched thin enough,” Keefer noted. “My bill would hold those who make these malicious hoax calls financially liable.”
Lastly, Representative Jim Rigby proposes granting civil immunity to officers responding to swatting incidents. Reflecting on his experience as a former police chief, Rigby commented, “These ‘swatters’ are toying with officers’ passion… potentially putting lives at risk.”
The bills aim not only to deter potential offenders but also ensure justice and compensation for victims while safeguarding law enforcement resources.
