Grad

Media-Providence Friends School issued the following announcement on Apr. 29.

We'll be posting a Q&A with one of our grade 8 students each Friday leading up to the Graduation of the Class of 2022. Join us in getting to know what makes an MPFS graduate so special as we countdown to the big day!

A Q&A with 8th Grader Evangeline Watkins, Friends' Central School

Class of 2022 Time Capsule

Describe yourself in three words: Athletic, kind, and caring.

When you’re not at school, what activities or hobbies do you enjoy? I swim. I’m on a swim team. Right now I am swimming for the Suburban SeaHawks in Newtown Square. In the summer I swim for Hidden Hollow near Linvilla. I’m not sure yet but since I'm going to Friends Central, I'm probably going to be swimming on their team. I walk around in Media with friends or just hang out with my friends.

Who is your favorite musical artist, band? What is your current favorite song?

As of right now my favorite artist is Tyler the Creator and my favorite song is “New Magic Wand” by Tyler the Creator.

What is your favorite television series and/or movie?

My favorite series is Umbrella Academy and my favorite movie is probably Miss Peregrine's  Home for Peculiar Children.

What is your current favorite book?

Charlie Hernandez and the League of Shadows (by Ryan Calejo). So it’s about this boy named Charlie who is living with his aunt, I believe, and she’s very good to him but she’s also very old. He meets this girl Violet and they become quite good friends and start going on all these adventures together in finding out about him and his parents…and then there’s this other character named The Crying lady. They are finding out about these different myths and learning they are real.

The MPFS Experience

What grade did you start at MPFS?

I started in kindergarten and my first teacher was Teacher Heather.

Do you have a favorite MPFS memory, event, or tradition?

My favorite memory is being in Into the Woods. I was the Head Narrator. Mainly for the Baker and the Baker’s Wife, the two main characters. I had good lines in it and it was really fun and the process of doing it…I was also in concession like helping to make foods related to the musical.

What interests have been sparked during your time at MPFS?

Probably in art class. I didn’t know that pottery and clay could be so much fun. Most classes I’ll ask if I can do something with clay if we’re not already doing a project. I’ve made cups, a tiny pitcher, a bowl, pinch pots, and a tiny castle once. It’s just fun and calming. I just like making things from scratch.

What do you think is the most important lesson you’ve learned at MPFS?

A really simple one which is to treat others how you want to be treated. It’s taught me to make sure if you’re going to say something to someone, imagine how that would make you feel.

What do you think you’ll miss the most about MPFS?

My friends and my teachers. For the teachers, I really like their teaching styles. For my friends, I’ll just miss them. Some of them I’ve known for nine years and some I’ve known for two.

High School & Beyond

Where are you going to high school?

Friends' Central High School

Are you looking forward to trying any new activities, sports, or subjects in high school?

I’m excited to try water polo. I know that their team isn’t very good. It’s kind of interesting that you have to tread water the whole time. There is an English class that I was in when I visited and it was pretty interesting. They were talking about a very interesting book and steampunk.

Do you have an idea of what you’d like to study in college or what you might want to be when you grow up?

Careers that sound interesting to me are probably like interior or exterior design on houses or becoming a realtor. I like designing things. There’s this game that sometimes I play where you can make a house, it’s very detailed, and it’s fun to make a house. There’s furniture, paintings…

What advice do you have for next year’s middle school students?

Advice that I have is don’t procrastinate. Try to focus because sometimes if you look away, the teacher has written like a whole paragraph. Make sure you are paying attention and focusing. Make sure you’re invested in the class for the time being.

Anything you want your family, friends, or teachers to know about you or your MPFS experience?

It’s been really fun here and I hope that other people come and see what a great school this is. The teachers are really great here and adjust to your learning pace. So if you’re new here, ask for help and you can get help because there’s free time sometimes that we have adn you can go ask for help if you need it.
