Media-Providence Friends School issued the following announcement on May 20.

We'll be posting a Q&A with one of our grade 8 students each Friday leading up to the Graduation of the Class of 2022. Join us in getting to know what makes an MPFS graduate so special as we countdown to the big day!

A Q&A with 8th Grader Parker Jimenez, Springfield High School

Class of 2022 Time Capsule

Describe yourself in three words:

Outgoing, curious, athletic

When you’re not at school, what activities or hobbies do you enjoy?

Baseball -- I play third base for Media. And I like to ride my bike around my neighborhood.

Who is your favorite musical artist, band? What is your current favorite song?

Lil Tjay for sure. His songs are totally different. His beats…a lot of rappers sometimes if they have a hit song they will use the same beat, but he makes his brand new.

What is your favorite television series or movie?

My favorite television series is probably Stranger Things or On My Block. Stranger Things especially is not realistic and, well, both show have this, “What’s going to happen next?” feeling in every show. There are all these possibilities and predictions that you have in your mind for what could happen.

What is your current favorite book?

Monster by Walter Dean Meyers, which we read in humanities. I think the concept of it being a script was really interesting. It’s just something new and I like movies that have something to do with court cases that are really interesting. That’s basically what the whole book was about.

The MPFS Experience

What grade did you start at MPFS?

It was second grade with T. Shirley.

Do you have a favorite MPFS memory, event, or tradition?

Echo Hill in fifth grade. It wasn’t like any other trip because there were other schools at Echo Hill and it was a whole different experience. We had our own cabins with six people in it and it was me, Eric, Gage, and Lasanah. We’re good friends so it was really fun. We did hikes and those were fun.

What interests have been sparked during your time at MPFS?

Right now in humanities we’re learning about Romeo & Juliet. We’re kind of learning the language and it’s weird but really interesting. We’re watching the movie in class with Leonardo DiCarpio.

What do you think is the most important lesson you’ve learned at MPFS?

If there’s anything negative, there’s always some kind of positive in that negative space. Or you can make it positive. I’ve been here for a pretty long time, so it’s just kind of there. You don’t even think about it. It just automatically happens.

What do you think you’ll miss the most about MPFS?

Definitely my friends. We’re probably still going to talk. But yeah, my friends and some of the teachers I’ve known for a pretty long time. It’s different…where I’m going to high school, it’s a public school. Teachers (here) have more time to focus on your needs and helping you with things that, at public school, probably won’t happen.

High School & Beyond

Where are you going to high school?

I’m going to Springfield High School for my freshman year.

Are you looking forward to trying any new activities, sports, or subjects in high school?

I’m excited to try out for all the sports teams. Here we have soccer and basketball. But Springfield has all these other sports, like baseball. I’m excited to reconnect with other student. For kindergarten and first grade I went to Springfield Literacy Center, and I made good friends there. But when I came here I lost touch so now that we’re going to high school, I’ll see them there.

Do you have an idea of what you’d like to study in college or what you might want to be when you grow up?

I think I want to start my own business. I don’t know what. It just seems fun. I know it will be hard work.

What advice do you have for next year’s middle school students?

Don’t procrastinate. Then it gets stressful and then the day before it’s due, (you’re) stressed out. You don’t want to do that. It’s not healthy. Make sure you get good grades in your first trimester as an eighth grader if you’re applying to private schools.

Anything you want your family, friends, or teachers to know about you or your MPFS experience?

It was fun. Every grade there was always some fun thing, like trips, projects, or having new students join your class.
