State Rep. Craig Williams (R-Delaware) expressed his satisfaction at the official reopening of the Smithbridge Road bridge on April 19, marking the completion of the rebuilding of the nearly 100-year-old bridge. The bridge serves as a vital connection for the Bethel, Concord, and Garnet Valley communities, linking residents to Route 202 and important educational institutions like Garnet Valley High School and Middle School.

The closure of the bridge in July 2023 for urgent repairs, following inspections revealing critical deterioration, disrupted the daily commute of nearly 8,000 motorists. Williams collaborated closely with PennDOT to expedite permits, township improvements, and contractor bidding processes. Despite the expedited schedule, the bridge opened one day earlier than projected.

Williams commended the construction team’s diligence in adhering to the schedule and expressed gratitude to the community for their patience. He highlighted the behind-the-scenes coordination and the contractors’ efforts, particularly during challenging weather conditions. Williams urged appreciation for the involved parties, including PennDOT officials, contractors, and subcontractors, for their contributions to the project’s success.

Acknowledging the disruptions caused by the project, Williams thanked the community for their understanding, emphasizing the significance of their support during the construction period. The area where the bridge is situated experienced significant rainfall, leading to delays in construction progress. Despite the challenges, Williams ensured recognition for all individuals and entities involved in the project, underscoring their dedication and hard work.

The reopening of the bridge was eagerly awaited by local residents and businesses, promising to improve access to essential services and facilities. The restoration of the bridge is expected to enhance community connectivity and stimulate economic activities in the area.

The ceremony commemorating the bridge’s reopening featured remarks from various officials, including State Sen. John Kane, Concord Township Council President Dominic Pileggi, and Road-Con Inc. President Al Hoffman. Representative Craig Williams expressed gratitude to all those involved in the project, emphasizing the collaborative efforts that facilitated the successful completion of the bridge reconstruction.
