The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has dismissed the impeachment case against Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, citing procedural grounds. The court determined that the articles of impeachment filed in 2022 had expired with the end of that legislative session, preventing the Senate trial from proceeding. Consequently, the substantive allegations contained within those articles remain unresolved.
Lead Impeachment Manager Representative Craig Williams expressed his thoughts on the ruling: "Today the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled the House of Representatives is without constitutional authority to proceed with the impeachment articles from a previous session." He emphasized that while procedural issues were addressed, questions regarding whether Krasner's alleged misbehavior met constitutional standards for impeachment remain unanswered by the court. Williams stressed, "The rule of law and the public’s confidence in the criminal justice system requires it."
The impeachment efforts were primarily based on accusations involving false statements and omissions made to state and federal courts concerning certain cases. However, these claims were not evaluated by the court due to its focus on procedural matters.
Representative Tim Bonner also shared his disappointment with the outcome: “I’m disappointed today that we did not learn if the Supreme Court believes the misbehavior in office meets the constitutional standard.” He highlighted concerns about integrity within the justice system, stating, “A prosecutor who deceives the courts compromises our justice system and cannot be allowed to continue in office. We will continue to fight for integrity.”
