Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, representing Pennsylvania’s 5th district, has expressed her views on various political issues through a series of tweets dated January 22, 2025. Her statements address topics including border security legislation, reproductive rights, and the actions of former President Donald Trump.
In a tweet posted on January 22, 2025, Congresswoman Scanlon criticized S. 5 for failing to address border security or immigration reform. She stated: "S. 5 does absolutely nothing to secure our borders or reform our immigration system. What it does is exploit a young woman's tragic death to score cheap and grossly misleading political points." She confirmed her decision by adding "I'm voting NO."
On the same day, at a later time, she highlighted concerns over restrictions on fundamental freedoms due to policies advocated by the GOP. Scanlon wrote: "Far too many Americans are being denied their fundamental freedoms because of the GOP’s extreme agenda. With millions of people struggling under abortion bans post-#RoevWade, I proudly join @ReproCaucus in the fight to protect your reproductive rights and freedoms."
Later that evening, Congresswoman Scanlon commented on former President Donald Trump's first day in office regarding his handling of individuals involved in the January 6 incident. She asserted: "Donald Trump spent his first day in office freeing hundreds of violent criminals who attacked law enforcement on January 6." Additionally, she criticized House Republicans for supporting these actions by stating they stand with Trump in "letting people who beat, tased, and pepper sprayed police officers free in our communities."
